Answer:
Reading Quran is not enough to understand Quran or Islam, because prophet peace be upon him was sent to explain the revelation which means that to understand the revelation we need to refer to the explanation and interpretation and the model presented by prophet peace be upon him and his companions the pious predecessors.
Now coming to the question, most atheist and critics of Islam read the interpretation or explanation of Quran and Islam from Islamophobic websites and accept it as gospel truth, without making the effort to read the original sources. Some may make extra effort and read english translation of Quran.
However, almost none would have ever read Quran and the tafsir, the seerah and the hadith to get the holistic understanding of Islam.

Muslims understand the Quran/ revelation as per the explanation of prophet & understanding of the companions & righteous predecessors

As Quran was revealed to prophet PBUH & as he was sent to explain the revelation & present live example/model to mankind no other interpretation or explanation can be accepted of the Quran if it contradicts this understanding.

So everyone is bound by the explanation of prophet & companions understanding if he speaks about Quran.
I went through many posts and I can see people quoting from faithfreedom, religionof peace etc. which are ZIONIST FUNDED, ISLAMOPHOBIC WEBSITES which proves my point that very few actually read the Quran rather they visit few islamophobic websites and start thinking it as truth.
