Was Allah a Moon God Before Islam

Answer:

People might have different reasons for believing something which is FALSE. However these people are unaware of interesting FACT that even the Arab polytheists during the time of Prophet peace be upon him believed in Allah as god almighty as is mentioned in Quran:

If you were to ask them: “Who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon?” They will surely reply: “Allâh.” How then are they deviating (as polytheists and disbelievers)? (Al-‘Ankabut 29:61)

If you were to ask them: “Who sends down water (rain) from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death?” They will surely reply: “Allâh.” Say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allâh!” Nay! Most of them have no sense. (Al-‘Ankabut 29:63)

And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allâh, making their Faith pure for Him only, but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others. (Al-‘Ankabut 29:65)

“And if you ask them who created them, they will surely say: ‘Allaah.’ How then are they turned away (from the worship of Allaah Who created them)?” [al-Zukhruf 43:87]

In these verses Allaah states that the arab polytheists used to affirm that He (ALLAH) is the Creator, Sovereign and Controller, but despite that they did not worship Him alone (Tawheed of worship) and used to associate partners to him (Allah) by claiming that these partners (whose idols they were worshiping) would help them reach closer to him (Allah) as they (idols) could intercede on their behalf with Allah. This act of theirs was considered as Polytheism in Islam which is considered the biggest sin.

Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped)” [al-Baqarah 2:22].

And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostate to Allah, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.[Fussilat 41:37]

Islamic Monotheism (Tawheed) in Arabic means attributing Oneness to Allaah and describing Him as being One and Unique, with no partner or peer in His Essence and Attributes. It may be defined as Believing that Allaah is One with no partner or associate in His Lordship (ruboobiyyah), divinity (uloohiyyah) or names and attributes (al-asma’ wa’l-sifaat).
