Is ISIS Practicing Pure Sunni Islam

:::note[Description]

Question:

Is ISIS practicing pure Sunni Islam as in 7th century Arabia? - A debate on whether ISIS practices authentic 7th-century Sunni Islam or a distorted version. :::

Answer:

Firstly the question itself is misleading and tries to lead a person to think in negative way about Islam and Muslims. So the wording of the question needs to be changed if the real intent of question is to undertsand the truth and not a hate propaganda in garb of asking a question.

If anyone wants to learn about Islam then he needs to refer to Islamic Scriptures and Scholars to get the right guidance and interpretation.

Now coming to ISIS and similar terror groups then please refer to what Islamic Scholars have stated about these ideologies and groups:

A Brief Guide to Islam and Its Position Towards Al-Qaeda and ISIS A Brief Guide to Islam and Its Position Towards al-Qaeda and ISIS This is a much needed, concise and useful handbook for presenting an understanding of the basic foundations of Islām to non-Muslim audiences of varying backgrounds. It discusses the historical origins of al-Qaeda and ISIS , which return to the misguided early Khārijite sect and its extremist doctrines. It also addresses many misconceptions held by non-Muslims due to media coverage of the extremism and terrorism of these groups. The book will also be helpful for Muslim institutions such as mosques and schools. It can be used by these organisations to educate their audiences on how to challenge this extremist ideology and how to buffer their communities from the mendacious propaganda and dedicated recruiting efforts of this very small, outcast, yet very vocal band of extremists. Contents The first twenty or so pages provide a basic introduction to Islam. The next thirty pages or so detail the historical appearance of this ideology in the form of the Kharijite sect. Their statements and activities show how the doctrines of extremism in takfir , “ruling by Allaah’s law” and ” jihad ” were part and parcel of their claim of “establishing a caliphate”. This provides the background for analysing and evaluating the revival of this same doctrine in the 20th century at the hands of ignorant thinkers and how this led ultimately to the appearance of al-Qaeda and ISIS . Then a variety of misconceptions are dealt with, those that are common on minds and tongues of non-Muslims on account of what they see, hear and read through the print and digital media outlets. Islam is Against Terrorism And The Islamic Legal Rulings On Terrorist Acts And Those Who Commit Them The following is a transcription of a live tele-link lecture given by By Shaykh Alee al-Hadaadee (Riyaadh, Saudi Arabia) to an audience in London organized by al-Athariyyah. All praise is due to Allaah the Lord of everything He created and the peace and blessings of Allaah upon the best of Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, whom Allaah sent to mankind as a mercy, and peace and blessings upon the family of the Prophet and his companions, and upon those who follow the guidance of the Prophet until the Day of Judgement. O my noble brothers, we heard the unfortunate news, which occurred yesterday in the city of London, relating to those explosions which took place which resulted in many people dying and many people being wounded. And there is no doubt that this is an unfortunate and sad affair and it’s even worse if these acts have been committed and carried out in the name of Islaam, because Islaam is free and far removed from these types of acts. It does not command with these types of activities, and Islaam is not pleased with the likes of these activities. Rather, Islaam prohibits the likes of these things. And Islaam is at war with these types of treacherous acts. And likewise, Islaam threatens a heavy punishment to those people who do these acts, in this life and the hereafter. Verily the true Islaam is that which has come in the Qur’aan (The book of Allaah) and in the Sunnah (The guidance of His noble Messenger). And not everything that is said to be Islaam is in actual fact considered part of the religion of Islaam. And this is to be returned to the Qur’aan and to the Sunnah. We find in both of them a clear warning against every type of transgression. Warning against transgressing against a Muslim and a non-Muslim. Allaah, the Most High, said: And do not kill those souls whom Allaah has prohibited unless [justified by] a due [legal] right And those souls that Allaah has prohibited, it is referring to the life of a Muslim. And it is referring to everyone who has an agreement with the Muslims , and likewise those non- Muslims who have been given right of safety by the Muslims . The Messenger of Allaah said, in an authentic hadeeth reported by imam al-Bukhari, Whoever kills a non-Muslim who has an agreement with the Muslims then he will not smell the fragrance of Paradise And this is a severe threat. That the Messenger of Allaah, Muhammad, threatened those people and he promised them; he promised those who kill non-Muslims, after an agreement has reached between them, that they will not enter Paradise on the Day of Judgement. And by this hadeeth we surely understand and get to know, we obtain with certainty, that these bombings, if committed by a Muslim, they have oppose the book of Allaah. And they have opposed the Sunnah of the Messenger. O my brothers, these types of activities will result in many evils and harmful effects. The first of them That transgressing against a person without any due right and taking a life with http://www.islamagainstextremism.com/articles/klpog-islam-is-against-terrorism-and-the-islamic-legal-rulings-on-terrorist-acts-and-those-who-commit-them.cfm So who is expected to be more knowledgeable about Islamic religion - the Islamic sscholars who provide the explanation in light of Islamic Scriptures and methodology of Prophet PBUH or these terror groups who use religion to further their political agenda ?

Important point to note is that Prophat PBUH had foretold about deviated groups (Khwarijis) who will commit terrorism in the name of Islam and also mentioned their charcateristics and have warned muslims against such ideologies.

Khawaarij - Who are they ?

Khawaarij (Kharijites): The first sect that broke away from mainstream Islaam by choosing their own interpretation of religious text over that of the Companions of the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam).

Many authentic hadeeth from the prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) condemning them have come in ten different forms of narration like what al-Khalal narrated from Imam Ahmad that he said: “The Khawaarij are wicked people, and I don’t know of any people on earth more evil than they.”

From their attributes is their outward portrayal of righteousness and piety while concealing corruptiv beliefs inside. [The Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:] One of you would belittle his own prayer when compared to their prayer and his fasting compared to their fasting. They will recite the Qur`an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through a target.

Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: They read the Qur`an, thinking it is in support of them while it is actually against them.

Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) described them: Young in age, having reckless and deficient intellects.

Imam Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and al-Hakim recorded a Ḥadith from Ibn Abi Awfa, and Ahmad and al-Hakim also recorded it from Abu Umamah that the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “The Khawaarij are the dogs of Hell.”

Ibn ‘Umar (radiallaahu ‘anhumma) said, “I heard Allah’s Messenger (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) say:Every time a new generation of them rises, they will then disappear, more than twenty times and then said: Until the Dajjaal (Anti-Christ) finally appears among them.

Prophet (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam): Whoever kills a Muaa`hid (a non-Muslim promised safety) will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise even though its scent can be smelled from forty years away.

The emergence of ISIS can be attributed to the power vacuum resulting from the war in Iraq and Syria. It is important to note that the majority of ISIS’s victims are Muslims themselves. Muslim scholars have consistently denounced ISIS, denouncing them as the soldiers of Shaytan. Combining the members of various terrorist groups worldwide who exploit misguided Muslims, these groups account for less than 0.01% of the entire Muslim population.

All of the factors mentioned above clearly demonstrate that ISIS is not associated with Islam or Muslims. In fact, their actions directly contradict the teachings of Islam, posing a greater threat to Muslims than any other group.

Is ISIS a salafi Organization ?

While reading the responses to this question from other individuals, I came across a claim that ISIS is a Salafi organization. This misconception highlights the lack of understanding about the fundamentals of Islam and its various sects. ISIS is rooted in a deviated Khariji ideology that promotes extremism, whereas Salafi ideology opposes extremism and instead advocates for the moderation of religion as prescribed by the Quran and Sunnah.

Does Islam Promote Beheading of Prisoners ?

There is only one such incident related to Qurayza, a tribe who lived in Medina alongside the Muslims, had broken their treaty of non-hostility with the Muslims at the height of the Battle of the Trench, and intended to attack them from within. As a result of their treachery they were punished and this is similar to death sentence carried out for treason even as per laws today in many countries. However even in this incident women and children were spared.

Prophet PBUH forgave his enemies after victory:

Yet, when he entered Makkah victorious with an army of 10,000, he did not take revenge on anyone. The Prophet said to the Quraish:

“O people of Quraish! What do you think I will do to you?” Hoping for a good response, they said: “You will do good. You are a noble brother, son of a noble brother.”

The Prophet then said:

“Then I say to you what Joseph said to his brothers: ‘There is no blame upon you.’ Go! For you all free!”

Rarely in the annals of history can we read such an instance of forgiveness.

Prophet forgave even his archenemies THE mercy of the Prophet (peace be upon him) even extended to those who brutally killed and then mutilated the body of his uncle Hamzah, one of the most beloved of people to the Prophet. Hamzah was one of the earliest to accept Islam and, through his power and position in the Quraishite hierarchy, diverted much harm from the Muslims. An Abyssinian slave of the wife of Abu Sufyan, Hind, sought out and killed Hamzah in the battle of Uhud. The night before the victory of Makkah, Abu Sufyan accepted Islam, fearing the vengeance of the Prophet (may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him). https://www.arabnews.com/prophet-forgave-even-his-archenemies So one of the great qualities of Prophet Muhammad PBUH was that he never took revenge on anyone for personal reasons and always forgave even his firm enemies.

“…You can debate me and try to prove that ISIS are not true Muslims. Bring it on; I dare you!….”

To Him my Response is as Follows:

So as per your challenge I say ISIS are not true muslims. What is your claim or justification of proving otherwise ?

Please find below my response to some of your arguments you have provided to support your claim that ISIS is true muslim and their actions are inspired by Islam:

Alligation#1 Let’s start with their (ISIS) flag.

Action speaks louder than words. The intention of flag may be to garner supporters in name of Islam. Just like when politicians claim to do something to win elections which they never intended in fulfilling.

Alligation#2 You mentioned about narration form Prophet that mentions Victory of Muslims in various battles

The narrations concerning the signs preceding the end times and the triumph of Muslims in the battle are acknowledged. However, this battle specifically pertains to combating malevolent forces and enemies of mankind. Dajjal, the false messiah, shall emerge and establish dominion over the world, leading to widespread oppression and destruction, coercing individuals into worshipping him. Therefore, if one presents Islamic texts, they must either wholly accept or entirely reject them. It is misleading to select isolated narrations and falsely depict Islam as advocating the killing of innocent non-Muslims who neither engaged in hostilities nor oppressed Muslims.

Alligation#3 You mention several verses pertaining to Jihad

Under specific circumstances and conditions, these verses hold relevance. None of the prerequisites for jihad are met by terrorist factions like ISIS. Therefore, despite scholars of Islam denouncing terrorists and labeling them as minions of evil, why are you persistently determined to assert that their actions are aligned with Islamic teachings? Whose viewpoints should you prioritize when it comes to matters concerning religion: the scholars who provide references from scriptures or the terrorists who exploit religion for their own selfish motives?

If you go by mere caims then President Bush claimed that god commanded him to invade iraq and Trump claimed that Hillary & Clinton founded ISIS:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-trump-idUSKCN10M146/ George Bush: ‘God told me to end the tyranny in Iraq’ - The Guardian George Bush: ‘God told me to end the tyranny in Iraq’ The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/world/2005/oct/07/iraq.usa The question of whose side you are on arises if you place more trust in the opinions of terrorists rather than Islamic scholars and intellectuals.
