Answer:

The apt word would be mistake not sin as a sin is done intentionally and mistake is unintentional. The prophets are mistake free from the point of view of delivery of the divine revelation as they are being guided constantly by Allah, however they are not free from minor errors / mistakes as they are still human beings. So prophet Muhammad saws like other messengers never committed any sin intentionally as an act of willful disobedience to Allah after being given the prophet hood.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said : “…The belief that the Prophets were protected from major sins (kabaa’ir) but not from minor sins (saghaa’ir) , is the opinion of the majority of Islamic scholars and of all (Muslim) groups… It is the opinion of most mufassireen (commentators on the Qur’an), scholars of hadeeth and fuqaha’ (jurists).” [Majmaa’ al-Fataawaa, 4/319]

Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] said: Most of the reports from the majority of scholars state that they were not infallible with regard to minor mistakes, but they were not allowed to persist in them; they do not say that this could never happen at all. The first suggestion that they were completely infallible came from the Raafidis, who say that they are so infallible that they could never make any mistake even by way of forgetfulness and misunderstanding. It is mentioned in Quran about the mistakes made by Adam, Nooh, Dawood alaihessalam etc. and also how they repented and asked forgiveness from Allah once they realized their mistake and Allah being the most merciful and forgiving accepted their repentance.
