To claim that proclaiming some statement has no religious connection firstly you need to know the origin of that statement and secondly you need knowledge of religion to understand whether it violates any religious principles.

In addition to it you should note that a person who obeys Indian constitution cant be called a traitor merely because he is not interested in fulfilling anyone’s whims of chanting some statements which is derived from superstitious beliefs (according to that person); Neither Indian constitution anywhere mentions proclaiming bharat mata and vande mataram as requirements to prove ones nationalism.

In fact those who force others to proclaim these statements are misguided as it serves no real purpose and violates Right to Freedom of Religion which has been provided by Indian constitution.

The song traces its ancestry to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s book, Anandamath, about a Hindu revolt against Muslim rulers. Was the song sung by millions of Muslims who participated in the independence movement? Absolutely not. Was it sung by Bhimrao Ambedkar and all Dalits? Or by Master Tara Singh and all his Sikh followers? No, and that is no measure at all of their patriotism.

When India gained independence, Vande Mataram was among the songs considered for the status of national anthem. But it was offensive to a large section of Muslims, and hence deemed inappropriate. National anthems and other patriotic songs should be instruments to unify citizens, not divide them (as Vande Mataram does). Were all the great leaders of the independence movement, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel, unpatriotic in rejecting Vande Mataram as the national anthem, and in opting against its singing in schools and offices? Did they not have the highest interests of the nation in their minds?

For sake of argument: Muslims can also claim that Allah-o-Akbar means god is great and that god created entire universe of which India is just a small part. So to proclaim God Almighty who created you and me and gave us each and every breath makes more sense than calling on lifeless piece of land which doesn’t have capability to give any benefit or harm. And then if Muslims force Non-Muslims to chant Allah-o-Akbar and call those who don’t as traitors is it acceptable ?
